Picklists a pain with data migration manager (DMM)

Posted on August 22, 2008. Filed under: data maps, importing data |

arggh…picklists suck w/ DMM.  Even though I’ve got the right values in my import file, DMM ignores the values and thinks instead they are names and then adds them to the existing picklists.
My next move is to hand-edit a data map and see if that will overcome this.

Found the missing picklist value

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: Lessons Learned, data maps, importing data |

Definitely was a good idea to import a small sample list of 20 instead of my real list of 4000.  I was able to identify all the picklist columns, then looked for what was different about the error row (I found that error row by comparing, 1 by 1, each row imported in CRM with [...]

Nasty import notification bug

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

I may not have to map all the picklists.  I got errors in the “prorate” field (Y/n) on the last import. I defined that picklist and then 20 sample records imported again.
Almost worked.  All but one row made it. But the bummer now is that error says ” one of more of the option values [...]

Looks like you gotta map all the picklists

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

OK, looks like mapping the Sex field to M/F worked out. The import still doesn’t work, but now the error points to another picklist field.  Shoot. Looks like I now gotta re-map all the values. Ouch.

BTW interesting in that I have mapped the “unknown” label to both empty and unmapped  values and I didn’t get an error [...]

Inconsistent import map ops

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: bugs, data maps |

On Map A,  I loaded my sample import file, mapped the fields but then realized I had an extra  uneeded field in the sample.
I deleted the uneeded column from the sample data file, then re-sampled it. I unmapped the unwanted field and then after re-sampling & saving/closing, the uneeded field was deleted.

With Map B, going [...]

Why do define picklists twice?

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: Questions for MS, data maps |

First of all, I’m pissed that I can’t import a picklist. I gotta friggin hand-enter the thing. But that’s not enough. I have to first hand enter, assigning name/value pairs, and apparently then I have to assign the same names to the same values within the data map section when the NV pairs initially entered [...]

Error messages should be findable!

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

The error I got was “The data map already contains this list value mapping” and the darn thing should have been findable in the help, but it wasn’t.  Just pointers to generic stuff that is not telling me precisely what this error message means.

Can’t map list values

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

I’m mapping a collection of list values and I’m trying to assign the “unknown (Default)” value to both the (empty) and (Unmapped) values. Can’t. I get “the data map already contains this list value mapping”.
So I’m going to see if I can load some more different values in the sample import file, then assign those [...]

Import mapping jacked

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

I added another label “unmapped” and then went to assign that label to the “unmapped” value and still got the same error message. I’ve got no way to get around this. I’m going to start an import map from scratch and that’s going to suck.

One unused attribute won’t allow itself to be ignored

Posted on August 12, 2008. Filed under: data maps |

I’m trying to get the data map to work right. Problem is that I when I remove fields from the import sample file, those fields don’t go away from the data map, even if I mark them as inactive and save, close, and open later.
I’ve got one custom attribute “Region” in particular that keeps showing [...]
